"Musically, we're more talented than any Bob Dylan or Paul McCartney. Mick Jagger can not produce a sound.'m New Elvis." - Rob Pilatus, 1990
I'm not sure whether he or Rob Pilatus "Milli" and "Vanilli", but thought it was a rock star.
Tan, Milli you the world of advertising? Are you the Vanilli of marketing managers? Or are you more like Mick Jagger? How to know the difference?
According to a business magazine, you should not waste their time responding to these questions.
Ad Age recently ran a front page headline read "A death of rock star CMO. "Oh, wait, sorry. He said:" DEATH OF THE CMO rock star. "The all-capital letters mean they are serious. But you knows what the article failed to mention? That's flattering, servile, journalism, coverage of the free publications as Ad Age gives people that makes everyone think that are rock stars.
Is not it past time for our industry ceases to refer to the marketing and advertising people as "rock stars"? I mean, some people really deserve the nickname.
Bono is a rock star. Mick Jagger is a rock star.
Marketing executives Middle or management team of creative directors, however, are not rock stars.
Since I work in advertising, not meant to be a rock star. If you 're reading this column, then I'm your biggest fan, but chances are you're not a rock star, either.
Now there is nothing wrong with saying that someone has extraordinary skill or talent. Heck, even an extra helping of charm and good looks can help you succeed in the advertising business. Without But to elevate someone to "rock star" status is madness. In a business where we look for "universal truth", the embrace of these fakes is universal bullshit.
What is even worse, that sets unrealistic expectations of a person is a rock star. Let's face it, it only takes a little time spent working for a company bureaucratic, dysfunctional agency, or hack Executive Creative Director, kill that reputation. And in corporate America, where nearly everyone has a belt-like electronic door plates and a large number of employee identification, some things are beyond the power from one person to change - no matter how much a person thinks of himself as a "change agent".
But marketing and advertising called anointed stars rock have bigger problems than inflated egos and pumped from the BIOS. It is simply not an illusion that can be sustained for long. Everything a rock star says that is said to break current paradigms. All ads that are involved with is that supposed to be genius. What gives to such stars of a license to be mediocre, because nobody dares to call them by their mediocrity. Therein lies the real danger that truly improve the profession not, perpetuate the downward slide of the same. Maybe that's why many of these stars are shooting stars in regard to newspapers, and why there is a new round of star crowned each year.
Do you buy into the myth-making? I hope you do not. Calling someone a rock star, not only raise falsely lowered himself into the process. It makes the sound immature. It makes you sound stars beaten.
"My agency corridors are filled with rock stars." "She is a true marketing rock star. "If that's what he thinks, then take the metaphor and make it happen.'re A groupie. It's like having to rock star aside and offering a tongue bath in the conference room or would autograph their breasts.
It's okay to admire people. It's good to have heroes, although generally believe that someone who has chosen advertising as a profession is not so heroic. As creatives told to never stop after your first thought when concepting, do not go bowing to someone in the creativity of our cover this month. You have to go deeper in depth to find people worthy of real ad admiration.
Unfortunately, the reports of the death of rock star of the CMO, along with those of the agency, are greatly exaggerated. There will be more false press releases, marketing managers promoted to demi more, more agencies, for the moment - and its leaders called "hot". It sells magazines. It gets people talking.
Just do not take it very seriously. And by God, if you are or become one of these stars, does not take himself too seriously. All the adulation could disappear tomorrow.
Girl, you know it's true.
