Star Blazers the sci-fi anamation series: what year was it made?

I just found a vhs of Star Blazers and it's really cool, so I want to know more. I checked e-bay for what I found (vol.2 episodes 3&4) but it wasn't listed (others were listed and are pricey, I got mine for a quarter). Now I'm interested in seeing all of them:
How many are there?
When were they made?
If you watched them, do you feel the series is a valid pursuit?
