USA Made Clothes-A Solution For Economic Problems

Our economy could be helped by simply buying American made t-shirts, instead of ones that are manufactured in overseas sweatshops. Buying American made products is one of the most important aspects to supporting the U.S. economy, instead of supporting foreign companies that treat their workers poorly. American made t-shirts are being produced by companies in the United States utilizing our natural resources, as part of the recent "green" movement. Foreign 'sweatshops' use cheap labor for their manufacturing, in addition to materials that may not be free of toxins and pollutants. There are many reasons for only purchasing USA made t-shirts.

If you buy USA made t-shirts, you showing support for your own country and keeping American workers employed. Countries overseas that are paying workers very little, denying them the basic rights of humane treatment and seeking reprisal for those who do not conform are not something that should be supported.

Shoppers are often unaware of the origin of the clothes they purchase. They might change their minds if they knew what was really behind the manufacture of these items.

Adhering to a few pointers can assure that you are supporting American workers and buying American made t-shirts. USA made t-shirts that is manufactured under the Fair Trade system is one identifier. These products are made by companies that value their workers and practice fair labor items such as a fair wage, breaks when needed and sick leave without appraisal. Workers who are in the Fair Trade system are often lower income or poverty stricken people that are trying to earn an honest living through hard work.

The Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees and Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Union came up with the UNITE HERE label to indicate American made t-shirts. USA made t-shirts purchased with a Union label is a guarantee that the workers who made your t-shirt are treated fairly. The union contract the company negotiates ensures safe and fair working conditions, fair wages and benefits.

Research companies before you purchase your clothing. Cooperatives in the U.S. employ lower income workers, and many utilize natural resources from America, which is worthy of support when you find American made t-shirts made by them. In addition to protecting the environment, it offers support for the low-income employees that are trying hard to feed their families. The co-ops are often formed by individuals who have an ownership in the company. This allows them to have a steady income and good working conditions. The products made are of a good quality because they take pride in the manufacturing process of a company they own.

Your favorite store can be the first place you start, when you decide to purchase American made t-shirts. If they carry brands that use sweatshops, you may want to bring it to their attention. The Responsible Shopper Website is a good source for checking a company's profile and finding out if any allegations have been made against them involving sweatshop practices during the manufacturing of USA made clothing. They will indicate if any accusations made against them regarding working conditions of sweatshops, in the company profile on the website.

If you make sure the clothing you are buying is not made in sweatshops with unfair labor practices, you will also be supporting the companies that practice fair labor standards. We want to look our best in the clothing we purchase, or we wouldn't have reason to buy it. Emphasis is on wearing name brand clothing and if American made t-shirts have the brand, this is all well and good. But if the brand you like is being made by children who are being mistreated and made to sit for hours without breaks, is wearing that brand worth it? Do some investigative work about the brands you like. Unfair labor practices will be stopped if these companies are unable to survive financially.

One Sunday morning in the early '70's, a youngster in Cleveland caught an earful of Van Morrison's 'Astral Weeks' and his life was never the same. These important questions are raised by Charlton Heston in Televi...

History of Thoroughbred Racing in the Usa

Settlers from Britain who brought horses and horse racing with them to the American New World, with the first race track laid out on Long Island as early as 1665. While the sport became a social local pursuit, the progression of organized racing did not appear until after the Civil War. (The American Stud Book was begun in 1868.) For the next several decades, with the prompt rise of an industrial economy, gambling on racehorses, and therefore horse racing itself, grew explosively; by 1890, 314 tracks were functioning across the country.

The prompt growth of the sport without any fundamental governing authority led to the domination of various tracks by criminal elements. In 1894 the nation's most notable track and stable owners met in New York to form an American Jockey Club, modelled on the English version, which soon controlled racing with an iron hand and ended much of the criminality.

In the early 1900s, however, racing in the United States was almost wiped out by antigambling opinion that led almost all states to ban bookmaking. By 1908 the number of tracks had fallen to just 25. That same year, however, the entrance of pari-mutuel betting for the Kentucky Derby signalled a reversal for the sport. More tracks opened as many state legislatures promised to legitimize pari-mutuel betting in exchange for a share of the hard cash wagered. At the end of World War I, prosperity and great horses like Man o' War brought spectators flocking to horse racing tracks. The sport prospered until World War II, dropped in popularity during the 1950s and 1960s, then enjoyed a resurgence in the 1970s triggered by the immense popularity of great horses such as Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and Affirmed, each winners of the American Triple Crown--the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes. During the late 1980s, another significant decline occurred, however.

Thoroughbred tracks exist in about half the states. Public attraction in the sport focuses primarily on major Thoroughbred races such as the American Triple Crown and the Breeder's Cup races (begun in 1984), which offer purses of up to about $1,000,000. State racing commissions have sole authority to license participants and approve racing dates, while sharing the appointment of racing officials and the supervision of racing rules with the Jockey Club. The Jockey Club retains authority over the breeding of Thoroughbreds.
